| Minister pats himself for good performance , villagers ferry water on ponies | | | early times report Rajouri, Dec 9: Thou-sands of villagers of Rehan, Trigula, Indrola, and Kardia in border district Rajouri are forced to carry water to their respective villages on horses from far away areas owing to total apathy and neglect of PHE which is supposed to ensure drinking water facilities to these villagers. People of border areas of district Rajouri are forced to ferry drinking water on ponies to meet their water demands owing to dried out dugwells and defunct hand pumps. Maximum dugwells have dried up within a span of three to six months digging. Residents of these areas facing acute shortage of drinking water have expressed serious concerned as there are only two sources of water in the villages which have dried up. They claimed that for filling water from the sources, we have to wait for four-five hours in a line and then carry water on ponies to meet the demands of the entire village. A local villager said, though water pipelines have been laid in the villages but so far, the drinking water has not been supplied by concerned department. He said, "Villagers are facing acute hardships owing to scarcity of water not only in summers, but in winters too, adding that, "Our crucial hours of the day get consumed loading and unloading of water from ponies" Residents of another village Thrieat are also facing acute shortage of drinking water as they have not received the water supplies from the department from past few weeks. Not on this part of the district but, Kalakote, Dassal Kandi, Bakori, faces acute shortage of water local villagers have to queue up for hours at a time to fill water from the wells because of the acute water crisis in the region. The water sources in the village are rain-dependent and have mostly dried up, as it has not rained yet in the area. Even local leaders has also expressed serious concerned over the hardships being faced by villagers of these areas on account of acute shortage of drinking water lamented that despite having taken to this serious issue with the concerned authorities and government in district board meetings, no heed has been paid.
