JKPCC chief overtly and covertly helping NC
Pre Poll Alliance
12/10/2012 1:14:17 AM
Rustam
JAMMU, Dec 9: Is JKPCC president Saif-ud-Din Soz helping the National Conf-erence which he served for many years before joining the Congress party? (Soz was one of the ideologues of the NC. He was also an ardent believer in the concept of greater autonomy, bordering on virtual sovereignty. He organized a couple of seminars on autonomy and also got published a book on autonomy.) What is the meaning and implications of what he said yesterday regarding pre-poll alliance with the NC on the sidelines of the thanks giving functions held at the Pradesh Congress Comm-ittee (PCC) headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu? What exactly was his message?
The answers to these questions are simple and straight. Yes, he can be accused of helping the NC overtly and covertly, whose popularity has been declining day by day. Leave aside the NC victory in the just-held Legislative Council elections, as everyone knows how this party could register a victory. The meaning of what he said regarding Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's pre-poll suggestion is also crystal clear. He in his heart of hearts wants pre-poll alliance with the NC. His statement that he could not take a decision on the suggestion mooted by the NC working president -- suggestion which was practically endorsed by the NC Working Committee yesterday in Jammu - and that it was for the party high command to take a final call or to accept or reject the suggestion is meaningless. And his message appears to be loud and unambiguous. His message is that he is not averse to the idea of forging pre-poll alliance with the NC and contesting the next Assembly elections jointly.
What exactly did he say? He, inter-alia, reportedly said: "I am an ordinary soldier of the Congress party and cannot say anything on policy decisions of the party. It is they who will decide whether to enter into any alliance with the NC or not. Both the parties (NC and Congress) gained a lot by entering into a pre-poll arrangement for the elections to the four seats in the Legislative Council. It was the partnership between the two parties that helped them win all the four seats, two each in Kashmir and Jammu regions".
It is clear from his statements that he was highly appreciative of the Chief Minister's suggestion. In fact, he gave him mind to clear the air and tell one and all as to where he stood. The very fact that he acknowledged that the partnership between the two parties helped them sweep the polls is a clear indication that he would try to persuade the Congress high command to endorse the suggestion. And in case he finally succeeds and there are reasons to believe that he would succeed, the biggest beneficiary would be the NC in Jammu Province, which can be described as the Congress' core constituency. The NC cannot win even six seats in Jammu province if it contests elections on its own. This became clear from the Legislative Council poll results.
