Jammu, Dec 24: In yet another shocking and shameful incident, a girl was allegedly gang raped on Saturday evening in Jammu after being abducted. Police have registered a case and initiated investigation. Meanwhile State's Women Commission (SWC) has condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of culprits apart from strict action against them. Sources said a girl (name withheld) in Rajan village of Jammu was allegedly gang raped by Gyan Singh and Shammi. "Accused first abducted the girl and then gang raped her in a minibus. Singh forcefully took her in the minibus while Shammi was already present in the bus and both committed the heinous crime", they said.
The Victim managed to escape from the culprits custody and narrated the unfortunate story to her parents the next day", sources added.
While terming the occurrence unfortunate State Womens Commission (SWC) Chairperson Shamima Firdous said that the commission strongly feels that the punishment for the offence should be enhanced. "It is very unfortunate. I'm sending a deputation from the Commission compromising only female members to visit the area and ensure justice to the victim and her family", she said adding "such incidents make made me cry and I as a woman feel the pain of the victim and her family. We demand immediate action on ground against the culprits."
When asked whether routine investigation and litigation would serve any purpose, she said, "If there is any negligence on part of Police, strict action will be taken against them. I'm looking into the matter and ascertaining facts. No negligence will be tolerated."
Pertinently, as the demand for stringent punishment to the accused in Delhi gang-rape grow louder, the government Monday announced the setting up of a committee of eminent jurists to suggest amendments in law for quicker trials and enhanced punishment for criminals in such cases.\ The committee will be headed by Justice (retd) J.S. Verma, former chief justice of India, a statement from the union home ministry said.
"In the light of the recent incident, the government has given consideration to the need for reviewing the present laws to provide for speedier justice and enhanced punishment in cases of aggravated sexual assault," it added.
Other members on the committee are: Justice (retd) Leila Seth, former chief justice of Himachal Pradesh and Gopal Subramaniam, former solicitor general of India. |
