| Real danger not from Pakistan- sponsored militants | | Tackling "mainstream" leaders | | RUSTAM JAMMU, Dec 24: The Union Home Ministry has, according to a report, asked the Army, State Police and Intelligence Bureau (IB) to "reconcile" their figures as far as the number of "active and infiltrated" militants in the state is concerned. It has taken this step taking into consideration the "disparity" in the number of active and infiltrated militants given by the Army, State Police and IB for the current year. "The disparity in the number of active and infiltrated militants is being reconciled…We have directed the security agencies to reconcile the numbers as soon as possible. I think in coming week the process will be completed," the report has said. The same report quoting the Ministry of Home Affairs has said: "The number of militants present in J&K (is) over 400, while the J&K Police has put the number of active militants at 223. On the other hand, the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC) working under the aegis of the IB has put this number at 104". Whatever be the exact figure, one thing is very clear: The number of militants, both local and foreign, ranges between 104 and 400. The number is not that significant. They cannot pose a real danger to the territorial integrity of the country, as the Army and paramilitary forces can eliminate them in no time provided the weak, meek and "secular" political establishment is willing to give a freehand to the security forces charged with the responsibility of defending the borders and fighting insurgency. These militants are still there in certain parts of Kashmir and Jammu because the Army and paramilitary forces have not been allowed to use more effective methods to nab and eliminate them. It is the political establishment in New Delhi which is basically responsible for the presence of militants in certain parts of the state. As said, these 400-odd militants cannot really pose a danger to India. The real danger is from those elements which are part of the establishment in Jammu & Kashmir. They are under oath to protect and advance further the national interests in the state and give a complete effect to what lays enshrined in the Indian Constitution, but what actually they have been doing is just the opposite. In fact, they are subverting the polity from within and outside. They are doing their level best to undermine the institution of Army, painting the security forces black and holding the Indian Constitution responsible for the "alienation of Kashmiri Muslims". They call them "mainstream" leaders and some of them also belong to a couple of Kashmir-based opposition parties. They pose themselves as "mainstream" leaders, but speak the language of Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. They are causing a real damage. What is even more disgusting is the role certain elements in New Delhi have been playing. They, like those in the state who have been subverting the polity both from within and outside, do air views from time to time which only serve to lower the morale of the Army and security forces involved in anti-insurgency operations in the state. They also refuse to give a clear response if someone asks them as to what they think about the attitude of "mainstream" Kashmiri leaders towards the Army, paramilitary forces and Indian Constitution. Here lies the real problem. Paradoxically, it has been happening since decades now. It is time to isolate such elements, who keep the pot boiling for personal benefit, and allow the Army and paramilitary forces a freehand. It's no use losing time in reconciling the disparities in the number of figures given by the Army, State Police and IB. The figures given by the Army appear to be more accurate. It is the Army which knows more than anyone else, as it is soldiers who are our committed men on the spot.
