EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 2 : Over 200 Tibetan exiles, including students, today staged a rally in the state's winter capital to protest against China's rule in Tibet. Amid anti-China and pro-Dalai Lama sloganeering, protesters holding Tibetan flag demanded freedom of Tibet and the immediate halt in oppression of Tibetans in China. Addressing the protestors outside the press Club of Jammu, Dawa Tsering, chairman of representative committee of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile sought support for immediate halt to the oppression and brutalities by China on Tibetans in Tibet and also call for protecting one of the ancient cultures in Tibet. He said, "In 1949 the communists established their rule over mainland china and then started invading Tibet from its eastern border in early 1950 under their expansion plan. "This oppression led to revolts against the Chinese occupation in the eastern parts of Tibet in 1956 which culminated in the national uprising in 1959 in the capital city, Lhasa, he said. "Thus, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the legitimate Tibetan Govt had to seek refuge in India, he said further adding, "during the last 60 years of occupation, the Chinese government has completely annihilate the very identity of Tibet." Speakers said, "Subsequently, in Tibet, the Tibetan people peacefully resisted against the Chinese Government's oppressive policies, the Tibetan people's resentment has grown stronger and Tibetans have finally resorted to self immolation as extreme protest against the Chinese government and until now 95 Tibetan have immolated themselves, 80 people have become martyrs, among the rest, most of them have been arrested by the Chinese authorities. Dawa and others said, "We ask for immediate support to stop these Chinese brutalities toward the Tibetans and also protect the one of the most ancient cultures and religious of India.' |
