| Srigufwara PHE with one doctor, one room mocking state's best health care award | | | Saahil Suhail ANANTNAG, Jan 2: Within the tall claims of better healthcare and riding buoyantly on the No 1 State award in the health sector at the India Today conclave held in November last, the state government is adopting a Nelson's Eye approach towards Primary Health Centre housed in a single rented room in Anantnag district of South Kashmir. Addressing the conclave, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at New Delhi in award receiving ceremony on Nov 1 boastfully said that his government has flagged health as one of the most important concerns in the development policy of the State adding that focused attention is being paid to upgrade basic health needs in the state. But perhaps he might have not been aware of the condition of Primary Health Center (PHC) Adalash, Srigufwara in district Anantnag which still continues to be functioning from a single rented room on the second floor of the building with just single doctor posted in the hospital. However the locals are anxiously awaiting the already announced 20 bedded Building for the hospital for which the construction work was started somewhere in 2003. This new hospital building is still a distant dream for the locals as it is still un-completed reasons better known to the concerned agencies. The people of the area have to bear the brunt of lack of health care facilities in the health centre and just hope for the better days when atleast some modern facilities will be made available to their door step in near future. "A PHC is supposed to be at least 10 bedded with availability of at least one assistant surgeon, one lady doctor, one dental surgeon, one physician, one ISM doctor, pharmacist and other Para-medical staff. But here the health center of the status of PHC is functioning in a single narrow room with just one ISM doctor," said a responsive Showket Ahmad. Another resident Ghulam Rasool lamented that PHC with a single bed and single doctor is a 'cruel joke' to the locals in the name of health care.' Locals rued that only a single ISM doctor is posted in this health centre and in case of any emergency there is no option but to refer the cases as an ISM doctor can't handles such a patient. The authorities at the time of the establishment of the PHC started running it in a single room saying that the building for the same will be completed in three years. "However 11 years have passed since the work on the building was started but same is still under construction," said annoyed residents with a sense of resentment of neglect brewing among them. When contacted chief medical officer (CMO), Anantnag, Dr Gulzar, admitted that the PHC there is functioning in a single room. However on being asked about the construction of new building, he said that paucity of funds has hampered the completion of the building. However, showing a bit of optimism, CMO said that this year i.e. 2013 we may be able to inaugurate the same and more staff will be deputed for streamlining the healthcare in the area. |
