| Confusion over today's Bharat Bandh, Political parties mum while several exams postponed | | Delhi Gang Rape: | | Sumit Sharma Jammu, Jan 2: A sheer confusion prevailed over Bharat Bhandh on January 3 in Jammu, as political parties preferred 'silence' but the examination conducting authorities have postponed the exams scheduled today i.e. Jan 3. Pertinent a nationwide Bandh on Jan 3 was called by protestors on Sunday in support of demand of justice for 23-year-old girl who was gang-raped in a moving bus on December 16. Protesters have said that political leaders will not be allowed to take part in the Bharat Bandh if they come with flags or placards of their party. In Jammu though no handout was issued by any political party regarding support to Bharat Bandh and leaders of various mainstream political parties including BJP refrained to reply the query regarding the bandh. While political parties remained tight lipped over the issue several institutions including Jammu University announced postponement of the exams to be held today on Jan 3. As per JU handout" all exams being held today i.e. 3 stand postpone due to unavoidable circumstances". According to Visvesvaraya Technological University, BE III and VII semester exams scheduled from January 3 to January 7 have been postponed in view of unavoidable circumstances. Besides, the Constitution of India and Professional Ethics Exams have been postponed and are likely to be held on January 21. The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) too has postponed two exams scheduled for January 3. The Commerce exam (Kannada shorthand) has been postponed to Friday and the second year D.ed supplementary exam has been postponed and rescheduled for January 1 Pertinently earlier on Sunday, the Congress decided to propose a tougher law to check crimes against women which could include a provision like chemical castration of perpetrators of rape in rare cases. The final draft of the Congress' bill will be submitted to the Justice JS Verma-led Committee, set up by the Centre in the wake of December 16 incident. At the same time, the BJP on Monday also suggested maximum punishment to the accused in rape cases, either death penalty or chemical castration. "There should be maximum punishment to the rapists, death penalty or emasculation (chemical castration of the rapist)," senior BJP leader Venkiah Naidu said. Meanwhile, two youth are continuing their fast at Jantar Mantar even on Wednesday. Rajesh Gangwar and Babu Singh are holding fast for the past ten and five days respectively. The duo has vowed to continue their hunger strike till the culprits of gang rape get death sentence and a strong law is framed to deal with crime against women. |
