| HC asks SWD to file response on causes of malnutrition in pregnant women | | | early times report Srinagar, Jan 2: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed the state Social Welfare Department to file reasons for malnutrition among pregnant women and its remedies. A bench comprising Justices Virender Singh and Muzaffar Hussain Attar stressed the need for implementation of Integ-rated Child Development Services (ICDS) schemes in the state in letter and spirit. The court was hearing a PIL seeking a probe into infant deaths at the G B Pant Hospital and better facilities. An affidavit, filed by G B Pant Hospital Medical Superintendent Muneer Massodi stating the causes of malnutrition of pregnant women and its remedies, was also submitted in the court. In the affidavit, he emphasised for implementation of ICDS schemes in letter and spirit. 'Billions of rupees are being spent annually on this programme and as per National Family Health Survey data final report, 78 per cent of women, supposed to get benefited by this scheme, do not receive any services,' the affidavit said. The ICDS scheme is established in all rural, tribal and hilly areas of the state and its implementation at grassroots level and evaluation by an independent organisation will make a lot of difference in the qualitative and quantitative services which are to be provided to all the beneficiaries in the state, it added.
