| NC-Congress to keep pre-poll alliance option open | | | early times report Jammu, Jan 6: With National Conference and Congress leadership feeling that it would not be in their best interests to contest upcoming Assembly elections together, the two parties have kept the option open for going alone in the polls. The NC circles are of the opinion that by contesting the next election in alliance with the Congress could weaken its vote bank in the Kashmir valley. Similarly the Congress functionaries feel that it would not be in the interest of the party in the Jammu region which is the main base for the organisation, if it fights the poll in alliance with the NC. "It is in this context that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has left it to the high commands of the two parties to decide on pre-poll alliance. As Chief Minister and as a senior NC functionary he could have taken a decision on his own but opted for a safe route by leaving the decision on framing pr e-poll alliance to the party high command," a senior NC leader said. Congress sources said that the party does not want to shut its doors for forging a post poll alliance with the PDP and as it wants to keep the option open as for as joining hands with either the NC or the PDP. A senior Congress leader said, "Since 2002 the Congress has gained the capacity for being a Government maker and it is not in the interests of the party to go in for any pre-poll alliance either with the NC or the PDP." He said the issue would be decided soon. "By joining hands with the party that has a bigger numerical strength in the lower house was to ensure a stable Government in Jammu and Kashmir," he added. |
