| As NC celebrates, Congress comes out of shell of complacency | | Soz, Azad hold meetings together in Delhi for '2014 polls' | | early times report Jammu, Jan 6: While the coalition led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is in an upbeat mood over completion of four years of rule in the state, terming it as a successful era of peace and prosperity, the Congress which is main partner in the alliance has not attached much importance to the celebrating spirit exhibited through pomp and show of advertisements on list of achievements. It has instead begun to come out of its complacent shell and started paying attention to what can be seen as first step towards preparation of 2014 Assembly elections. Sources said JKPCC president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Union Health Minister , who is more keen in politics in J&K , who are otherwise seen as leading the two divided factions of state unit of Congress , for the larger interests of party have begun an exercise together to take a stock of the party position in various constituencies across the state, a step which is in direction of preparation for elections on a serious note. Sources said the two stalwarts of the party have been holding meetings, without giving much hype to them in the Union capital to discuss the political scenario in J&K in general and have an assessment of party on ground for Assembly polls. Sources said during a couple of meetings between the two in last over 10 days, the Congress leaders while taking stock of party position , also discussed probable candidates for various constituencies who could get the mandate for 2014. Though this is an informal and initial exercise, the two leaders , upon the direction from high command have begun to seek the prospects of Congress in constituencies from where Congress had not won in 2008 , particularly in the Jammu region. A tentative list is also being prepared by two stalwarts who have been authorized by the high command to decide on all vital things related to next Assembly elections. Sources said even though there is over one year to start such an exercise, the meetings held by Azad and Soz together in New Delhi , without publicizing them assume importance for more than one reason. Sources said even though NC is trying to have cordial relations with Congress and also protecting a smooth picture of ties in the coalition, the senior leaders in party at the state level are not at all happy with the 'marriage' any more, NC being a dominant partner where Congress has been reduced to an insignificant ally having no say in whatsoever matter. Sources said even the two leaders Azad and Soz have been feeling 'political discomfiture' , that has been augmented with inputs from local leaders from the ground level that things are not in favour of party , which may reflect badly and impact the outcome of 2014 polls. Sources said though Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is enjoying full support of AICC general Secretary Rahul Gandhi for being at the helm in state , dominance of NC and its activities lately in Jammu region towards consolidating base in some constituencies are being seen by Congress leaders down the line in J&K as 'threat' to its prospects in Assembly polls. |
