Javaid Naikoo srinagar, Jan 20: The people of Kulgam observed strike and raised slogans against the police today following manhandling of the inmates of a house during a nocturnal raid by the police. According to reports, the police raided the house of Abdul Hamid Sheikh of Laru, Kulgam during the preceding night and allegedly thrashed the men folk and misbehaved with the women. The inmates including two girls were taken into custody. The incident caused a stir in the district. People came out and registered strong protest against the incident. The protesters also chanted slogans against the police and the government. Demanding immediate release of the arrestees, the protesters sought stern action against the `erring' police men. The SHO Kulgam identified the arrestees as Shafiqa, Hina, Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh, Mustaq Ahmad Sheikh and Tariq Ahmad Sheikh. According to him, all of them are wanted in an FIR lodged by one Bashir Ahmad Sheikh. The SHO said that the case was a property dispute and the arrestees had been playing hide and seek with the police for quite some time. "After getting information about them, we took them into custody around 5.30 am from their house. The allegations of excesses are baseless", he said. The Deputy Commissioner has ordered an enquiry headed by ACR Kulgam. He has been directed to file a report soon.
