Omar's 'check and mate'?
Rana's crowning as provincial president
1/20/2013 11:57:05 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 20: The installation function of Devender Singh Rana as National Conference Jam-mu province chief by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was nothing but to put his close associates at helm of affairs that could not go against him before 2014 Assembly elections.
The NC provincial headquarters Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan witnessed huge rush but most of the people were Gujjars of Nagrota Assembly segment from where Rana will be contesting the 2014 Assembly election. However, this was projected as if he (Rana) has supporters in Jammu city.
The people who made it to the NC headquarters were those who have stakes in NC. Not a single non NC member was present. NC leaders who had come to attend the function knew it very well that keeping Rana in good humour can get them a mandate for 2014 Assem-bly elections.
Rana has yet to prove his credentials as a political and mass leader having not contested any elections till date. He is what he is because of his proximity with the Chief Minister. It is widely believed that beyond government and Nagrota constituency, Rana stands nowhere as far as support of masses is concerned.
During the function, Omar said that he has talented people around him who could take party to new heights in Jammu region. Bringing them out of the government into the party fold ,he said, won't affect their efficiency.
Omar said he wanted to give the reins of the party to talented people. "I could have appointed party MLAs from Jammu region, who managed to win elections in 2008 after the Amarnath land row. But this is not the criterion for me. I want those people on top in the party who would dare to go against me", he said. It is believed that since Omar took over as J&K Chief Minister senior party leadership is not happy with his style of working. They feel marginalized despite holding important ministries in the government.
These leaders didn't want Omar as NC head and as future chief minister. They want Farooq back as the Chief Minister of the state.
To counter them, Omar has appointed his close associates on key party positions who could work on his behalf and muster support for him.
