Every high school to have sports teams, play fields: Taj

JAMMU, Jan 22: Underlying his priorities, Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Taj Mohi ud Din today directed the Department of Youth Services & Sports to ensure that every middle and high school has playing teams in at least three disciplines of cricket, football and hockey. Chairing a review meeting of the Department here today, the Minister asked them to ensure that every school has a playfield attached to it. In this connection, he asked the Director, Youth Services & Sports to issue circular instructions so that the process of talent hunt is set in motion from the school level. Taj asked the Department to gear up and start preparing youth for national and international level competitions. "We should introduce sports in length and breadth of the State", he said. He also asked them to start talent hunt in areas and districts so far not covered or which have remained un represented in the sports arena. The Minister was told that there are 6000 Physical Education teachers and masters deployed at the school level. He was told that the Department is developing a shooting range at Nagrota in Jammu and a sports complex-Gindunat Raj Bagh, Srinagar. Reviewing the performance of J&K State Sports Council, the Minister asked them to prepare for the coming general council meeting and start preparing agenda, etc for the same. Taj was told that 48 sporting associations are affiliated to Sports Council which are being provided grant in aid every year. He was told that the council has 69 sports stadia in the state attached to it and two centrally sponsored schemes, Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme and National Sports Development Fund under which an astro turf for Srinagar and an indoor sports complex for Jammu are being developed. Director, Youth Services & Sports, S. Jaipal Singh, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, Dilip Thusoo and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
