It seems the man-animal conflict is heating up and wild animals like leopards and bears are becoming target as losing their habitat the conflict has become common and wildlife authorities fail to save animals from human anger and the greed as well.
A leopard was beaten to death by villagers in north Kashmir's Kupwara area after this animal was allegedly has attacked half a dozen villagers of Dobi Mohalla- Gulgam of Kupwara District.
According to the police sources, the leopard injured four people in the area namely Salam Din Reshi son of Jamal Din, Bilal Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Ahad, Abdul Rashid Gojri son of Jamal Din and Farhat Ahmad Teli son of Hassan Teli residents of Gulgam Kupwara village .
Some locals of the area said this leopard in Kupwara was attacked by people from different areas adjacent to Gulgam and was brutally killed with axes and stones until it breathed last.
They said that police and wildlife officials reached the spot after it was killed by villagers and later wildlife employees took the dead body of this leopard killed with them.
According to the regional wildlife warden Kashmir, Manzoor Ahmad Tak, an FIR has been registered in this regard against the accused people. He said that five leopards were also killed by people last year following similar attacks by the wild animals but ironically only in one case in Kulgam an FIR was registered last year against the people accused of killing a leopard.
According to the wildlife experts, wild animals came down to human population areas during winters in Kashmir mostly after they felt a shortage of food items in jungles during this period, however they believe that due care of wildlife department can save these animals from the human greed if proper measures are taken in this regard.
