| Omar & Rahul sound poll bugles | | | While the recently installed vice president of the AICC,Rahul Gandhi, sounded the poll bugle for the Lok Sabha from Jaipur his friend,Omar Abdullah, followed him in Srinagar by giving a call to party workers to get ready for the Assembly election, due in 2014.It is going to be a coincidence that while the Lok Sabha elections are being held in the country the Assembly poll would be held in Jammu and Kashmir alongwith the general elections.Reports indicate that while Rahul Gandhi will be incharge of the Congress campaign in the Lok Sabha elections his friend,Omar Abdullah, who has been receiving patronage and support from Rahul during the last four years, will guide the destiny of the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir in the Assembly election in 2014,in case Omar did not opt for early poll, for which the possibilities were quite remote. After the Shivir Chintan in Jaipur the Congress leadership seems to be on the offensive with Rahul as heading the Congress brigade in the same way Omar has been in a fighting mood after the recent cabinet expansion and reshuffle. It is the outcome of his new found political strength that he has tried to make it a big by being present during the formal taking over as provincial President of the party by Nasir Aslam Wani and by Devinder Singh Rana.He has been apprised of the undercurrents of resentment within the NC circles over the cabinet expansion and reshuffle but he has decided to ignore it after finding his source of strength in the Congress high command,Rahul Gandhi, assuming greater importance in the organisation and in the Central Government even when he has been handling the affairs of the Congress led UPA Government from the sidelines. In Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah is in as much hurry for toning up the NC for the Assembly poll as Rahul Gandhi is for preparing the sloth hit Congress for the next Lok Sabha election in the country. It is in this connection that Omar Abdullah has asked the National Conference cadres to brace-up for 2014 Lok Sabha and state assembly polls. "You should keep this enthusiasm and feeling alive because now the time for the test is coming. This is the last year to make this party strong as 2014 is the election year. First the Parliamentary elections, then the state assembly elections," Omar has told his party workers in Srinagar. Omar wants the party to be ready for the elections to ensure success and take the state forward. "We have to make our party ready so that we win the next elections with good success and take this state forward," Omar has told workers. He has said the recent changes in the party will infuse new life in to it which will benefit its workers. Again a coincidence. While Rahul Gandhi has made a commitment in Jaipur that he would see to it that the Congress emerges with a new face and strong sinews Omar in Srinagar predicts that the party workers and people will see the National Conference in a new face, with new enthusiasm. Finding that the grass is no longer green for the ruling party Omar has emphasised the need for added efforts which would address the aspirations of party workers and the people in the state. Knowing that the success of a party in the elections depends also on the performance of party workers in mustering peoples' support he has urged ministers that they should take party workers into confidence while taking decisions on various development schemes.Normally a party head gives a call to party workers show readiness for the elections a few months prior to the fixing of the poll schedule but Omar has give a call to NC workers to make preparations for the poll a year before the election schedule is to be announced. He seems to have followed his mentor in the Congress high command,Rahul Gandhi, who too has called upon party workers and supporters to get ready for the general elections. The reason being their uncertainty over the poll prospects. While in Jammu and Kashmir the PDP holds a major threat to the NC in the country the Congress is scared of its allies and those that snapped ties with it.The Congress neither trusts the SP nor the BSP nor the NCP and it is not in a position to go alone in the Lok Sabha poll and win even simple majority when the BJP and its allies are trying to win over a section of the vote bank of the Congress.Omar Abdullah wants to go alone in the Assembly poll so that there was no misunderstanding among the voters in the Kashmir valley over the exclusive political existence of the NC in the state. It knows that after the elections the Congress will have no other alternative but to support the NC and share power. If Omar thinks like this he is mistaken. The Congress does not want to make any pre-poll commitment because if need arose it could repeat the 2002-2008 experiment by forging an alliance with the PDP. |
