'Streamlining of public transport is my priority':Ramzan

JAMMU, Jan 22: The Minister for Transport, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan today stressed for strict enforcement of traffic and road safety rules, saying this was imperative for minimizing road accidents and saving precious lives.
The Minister gave these directions while reviewing the working of transport department at a high level meeting.
Ramzan warned of stern action against the violators and maintained that directions have already been passed to cancel the route permit and license of the driver, if the cause of accident was found as negligent driving. Saying that day out and day in road accidents consume precious lives , the Minister directed the transport department and traffic police authorities to work in close coordination and implement the traffic rules regulations strictly. He said any laxity on this account would not be tolerated . " The state is not in a position to lose precious lives in road mishaps as we already lost many lives during prolonged turmoil and the need of the hour is to take stringent measures to control such tragedies". He called for launching massive awareness among the people to acquaint them about the traffic rules, road safety measures besides, having round the clock monitoring system on all routes, particularly accident prone areas.
The Minster directed the transport commissioner to utilize the services of Assistant Road Transport officers (ARTOs) for ensuring strict implementation of traffic rules and road safety measures in collaboration with traffic police to check the violations. He also stressed the need to streamline the system of issuing licenses to ensure that only well trained people get the same. "If we issue the license to only genuine people, the accident rate will automatically come down". Referring to the complaints against the private transporters about overcharging, the Minister gave directions to ARTO's to implement the new fare charges strictly and take action against those who resort to overcharging. He also stressed for implementation of the concessional fares to students, handicapped, senior citizens and cancer patients so that they were not deprived of their right. Ramzan directed the authorities to issue a circular within week's time restricting the stay of outside commercial vehicles in J&K beyond the prescribed time. The meeting was attended by Secretary CAPD and Transport, Abbass, Transport Commissioner, Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo, Managing Director, SRTC, J. S. Tandon, Director Garages, G. A. Sofi and other senior officers of transport department.
