| No taxes to be levied on farm sector | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 22 : The Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, has suggested to the farmers to secure benefit from the crop insurance scheme that had been introduced in the state over a year ago. Referring to the demand of a section of farmers for introducing crop insurance scheme, which they had raised during a pre budget meeting with the Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, the Agriculture Minister Mir said that the scheme has been functional in the state. He said despite the fact that the officials of the Department of Agriculture had made far mers aware of the benefits of the scheme during their interaction with the farming community majority of farmers had not approached the insurance company for securing insurance cover for their crops. In the meantime the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather has given a hint that no taxes were being imposed on various farming activities.He has stated that the State Government "has made almost entire agriculture sector tax free, with the main objective to make farming attractive, viable and gainful activity." He has said that main demands of the farmers which included tax relief on oil seeds, export of honey, power tillers and fertilizers especially on DAP had been already conceded.. Their other demands including crop insurance besides provision of free medicines for cattle levy toll tax on import of artificial flowers to promote local floriculture in the state had been fulfilled. Rather has hinted that in the ensuing budget session of the state legislature he may not impose any fresh taxes on any activity or services connected with farming. |
