| Neuro Surgery deptt of GMC&H needs critical care | | |

Jammu, Jan 23: Despite an alarming increase in the head and spinal injuries during the frequent road mishaps, the Government has failed to equip the department of neuro surgery in the Government Medical College & Hospital where such patients are referred from across the State to enable it to meet the rising contingencies.
While figures suggest that road mishaps claim 2 lives a day and leave 17 people injured everyday, it is shocking that there are only two neuro surgeons in the entire Jammu province to attend to critical head injuries.
Sources disclose that these two neuro surgeons have not been provided with even basic infrastructure for such surgeries. "The functioning of the Neuro-Surgery has been severely limited with the shortage of doctors, manpower and the basic infrastructure required for highly sensitive operations. Even, there was only one neuro surgeon was taking care of related case and a week ago one more Doctor has joined understaffed neurosurgery department of GMC&H," they said.
They revealed that presently neuro surgery has been clubbed with general surgery and it has to share the infrastructure of general surgery, which is hardly available for the neuro surgeons on a regular basis. "The two neuro surgeons have to virtually beg for the operation theatre for carrying out the routine surgeries. With no separate department, the neuro surgery unit doesn't have the required infrastructure of its own to work in a proper manner," they added.
With no neuro surgeon available at the district level in Jammu province, many of the patients with critical head injuries in the road mishaps die en-route to the main referral hospital of the province, which is itself battling for proper infrastructure. |
