| Who issued nuclear warfare advertisement to scare people? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 23: A huge controversy has arisen because of the paid advertisement issued by the State Civil Defence authorities asking people to remain alert against nuclear and chemical weapons. It is both comical and strange that such an advertisement should have been issued by the State Civil Defence authorities at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan, both nuclear powers are heightened. A widespread scare had spread among the people who have been asking each other what else should be done to save themselves from nuclear and chemical weapons. Although the senior most officials of the department are now asserting that the advertisement was issued as a matter of routine to coincide with the anniversary functions of the authority. Many national newspapers and international news agencies have carried stories about the advertisement causing a lot of panic among the people and their relatives who are living abroad. Even State Chief Minister on his twitter post ridiculed the issuance of the advertisement. It is no joke that many locals have been asking their relatives and friends to verify the veracity of the advertisement to the extent of finding out the reason behind its timing. Jammu city has always lived under the cloud of border tensions between India and Pakistan since 1947. Whether it was 1947 or 1965 or 1971, shells and bombs from across the borders have devastated the lives of the people living closer to the borders in the Jammu region. Agriculture, homes, livelihood and lives of the people along the border villages have remain devastated because of the tensions between India and Pakistan. If there is a full fledged war between India and Pakistan the brunt of the war would have to be borne by the people of Jammu and Kashmir State. This is the reason people in the Valley and the Jammu region have always lived uncertain and tense lives. Now the release of the advertisement by none other than the State Civil Defence has added to an already tense situation. Trying to dismiss alarmist news reports by saying that the timing and release of the advertisement has nothing to do with the prevailing border situation or the tensions between India and Pakistan is simply escaping responsibility which cannot be accepted. The State Government must initiate an enquiry into the entire episode and determine what has prompted the issuance of the advertisement that has disturbed thousands of people in the State and created a state of fear and uncertainty among thousands of others outside the State. |
