| Omar's 'Grand Alliance' nothing beyond off cuff remark | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Jan 25: After the recent MLC election results under "the Panchayat Quota" Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made a casual announcement of having a grand alliance between National Conference and Congress in the 2014 Assembly elections. Neither the State Congress leadership nor the Congress high command in Delhi reacted on this important matter till date and even the National Conference top leaders like its General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad and the Additional General Secretary of the party Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal too have remained mum over the 2014 grand alliance issue. Analysing these developments it seems to be very difficult for both National Conference as well as Congress to have a pre poll alliance during 2014 Assembly elections as it will create cracks among the party cadres in both the parties (NC & Congress) . In Uri, the constituency represented by senior Congress leader and Cabinet Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din who won 2002 and 2008 elections. Grand alliance would mean political death of Mohammad Shafi Uri and his son Dr Sajad who happens to be son in law of Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather. Similarly in Doda constituency, which is presently represented by Abdul Majid Wani, grand alliance would mean that Khalid Najeeb Soharwardhy, who has been MoS Home and is son of Moulana Attaullah Soharwardhy shall have to remain in political hybernation. Similarly, in Surankote, presently represented by senior Congress leader Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam, grand alliance shall mean shutting the doors for NC's Mushtaq Bukhari who won two consecutive elections prior to last. There are many more such constituencies wherein Omar's off the cuff idea of pre-poll alliance has the potential of causing huge explosion in his own party, which he would like to do without in any case. |
