| 66 pc nomad Gujjars, Bakerwals facing poverty, illiteracy: Survey | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 10: At least 66% population of nomad Gujjars-Bakerwals who fall under Schedule Tribe groups in the state of Jammu & Kashmir are living below poverty line, revealed in a survey conducted by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF), a frontal organization working for the cause of Indian tribes. The survey says the that both groups of Gujjar community are without sufficient food, fodder for their animals and lack of basic facilities like proper shelter, health, drinking water and education in J&K. Dr. Javaid Rahi while releasing the gist of the survey for media said that more than 71% of nomads are not aware of the schemes operating by the state and central governments for their upliftment under Schedul Tribe category. The Gujjars-Bakerwals were listed in constitution of India in 1991 under ST category and schemes were launched by State and Centre governments to uplift them socially, economically, educationally and culturally, the survey reads. The survey revealed that the Gujjars in the state were the poorest, living in sordid conditions, had no access to education as they are of migratory characters. The survey was released in a programme organised by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation to discuss 'Reasons of Backwardness among Nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals community. The survey revealed that more than 66% of total population of nomadic Gujjars-Bakerwals are shalter-less and are facing economic instability, food insecurity ,acute shortage of basic facilities, absolute illiteracy and lack of health facilities. The Gujjars , Bakerwal constitute 20% of total populations of the State and more than 85 percent" of Jammu and Kashmir's total tribal population.Among Gujjar and Bakerwals a sizeable population living nomadic life . The Survey suggested that this is high time to categories Gujjars and Bakerwal Tribe under the groups in India covered by United Nation under World Food Programme aimed at to combat malnutrition and to invest in human resources as the "Economic Survey of Jammu and Kashmir a government document tabled in state Assembly says that more than 42% population of Scheduled Tribe population majority of them belongs to Gujjars and Bakerwals lives under Below Poverty line. |
