| Situation fragile: Tough task ahead for CM, his govt | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 10-As curfew restrictions continue in the Valley the situation remains tense in most parts despite heavy deployment of police and the CRPF. The situation needs careful handling and the security forces must ensure that nothing happens that would give a reason for those who are looking for an opportunity to exploit the volatile situation. The hanging of Afzal Guru in Tihar Jail has not come as a surprise to anybody because the process of law was duly followed while carrying out the death sentence. Under the law of the land those who attacked the temple of democracy on 13th December 2001 could not be allowed to go unpunished. That is a fact of history which will be remembered for a long time to time. India's image as a soft state has cost the country heavily in the past. The central government is duty bound to ensure that the rule of law does not get compromised at any cost. Having said that, the state must guard against those who could push innocent civilians into trouble to score political points. The State Chief Minister and the entire law and order machinery is placed in an unenviable position. The CM has a constitutional duty to discharge and so has his law and order machinery. The onus of maintaining order in the state finally falls on the state police force. The state police force is discharging its duties under difficult circumstances. As the police and the CRPF are duty bound to ensure that curfew restrictions are obeyed and implemented, at the same time it has to use tact and care while handling the law and order situation. Civilian casualties are unacceptable to the extent that precious lives cannot be lost to the surcharged atmosphere in the Valley. Law enforcing machinery has to act with firmness and tact. The Valley has seen two peaceful summers during 2011 and 2012. Record number of Yatris performed the Holy Amarnath Yatra last year and a record number of tourists visited the Valley which has helped the local economy and brought in smiles on the faces of people whose livelihood depends on peace and progress. The government will have to ensure that the prevailing peace continues despite the provocations by those who have made violence their pastime and business during the last 23 years in the Valley. It is a difficult task and everyone must wish good luck to the CM and his administrative machinery this time. |
