| Guru hanging adds to Omar's woes | | Losing ground to separatists | |
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 10: At a time when the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was almost in control, the Guru hanging turned things the other way. The fear of losing ground to separatists must be giving him sleepless nights. The junior Abdullah treads a cautious path. He is neither openly attacking the centre nor is giving any impression that he shares a common page with the separatists on the issue. Seeing all the `good work' done by him going down the drain, the mood of the people during forthcoming assembly elections must be haunting him. Doing a bit of damage control, Omar in an interview with a news channel, asked center and judiciary to prove that execution of Afzal Guru was not selective. He also urged them to apply the same yardstick while executing Rajiv Gandhi's and Beant Singh's killers. Warning that Guru's hanging will alienate Kashmiri's further, Omar is trying to appease his own people who have gone mum after the execution and are looking towards Omar and Farooq to take them out of this crucial period. Sources said that National Conference (NC) workers who were on the job of revitalizing the party at grass root level are upset with this decision as they may face tough questions from people on the ground. If this happens, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is ready to catch the apple with both hands and not let any opportunity for NC to come back to power. Not only the NC men but the Congress leaders of valley who were expecting a good performance in 2014 elections also stand disappointed. The coalition government faces the litmus test on Monday when the secretariat opens. It (government) will come across the reaction of the common man and the valley based employees. Omar Abdullah has a rough road ahead. Restoring a peaceful atmosphere must be his top priority. So far he hasn't met his party workers as he continues to remain in Srinagar. It will be time to watch how he responds to queries of party leaders and workers when he returns to Jammu to attend work in civil secretariat. |
