PoK refugees demand comprehensive compensation
2/13/2013 12:07:30 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 12 : Refugees from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Tuesday demanded a "comprehensive package" from the central government in return of property lost during the Indo-Pak wars.
"We want a comprehensive package. We want reservation for our children, can't they do that?" agitating protesters said.
Insisting that the right to property was one of the basic rights of citizens, the PoK refugees of 1947, 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars said that it was the duty of the government to make sure that they were not devoid of this right. "The government gave away our lands as gift to Pakistan under Tashkent and Simla Agreement. In a democratic set-up the right to property is one of the basis and fundamental rights of the citizens, but we have been devoid of this right," they said at a protest demonstration held here. The protesters also alleged that there has been no response to the demands which they have addressed to the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, and former Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla. "They (government) had promised that those who did not get land. We will do justice with them. We will provide them financial package. They had said we will be compensated, we first demand the compensation for the property which we were forced to leave behind (PoK)," they said.
Meanwhile, the migrants from Jammu region also held a demonstration at the Purani Mandi area of the old city against the "step motherly treatment" meted out to them and demanded that they should be treated at par with the Kashmiri migrants.
"Since last eight years we have been protesting for our genuine demands. We fought against militancy along with army but we have been forced to live without shelter in Jammu.
We appeal to the government that migrants from Doda and other areas of the region be treated at par with the Kashmiri migrants," they said.
