| Rather motorcade attacked, curfew relaxed at certain places | | Taj's cavalcade stuck at Sheeri, 3 injured in police action | | ET Report Srinagar, Feb 12: The situation in Baramulla's Sheeri town took an ugly turn today when police and security forces fired rubber bullets on protesters injuring three persons. Unofficial reports said that the incident took place when Minister for Medical Education, Taj Mohiuddin's cavalcade on way from Chandanwadi, Uri to Baramulla got stuck near Sheeri where the protesters had already assembled. Sources said that the CRPF personnel deployed on the site tried to disperse the protesters and clear the road for Taj's cavalcade. However, the protesters resisted and started pelting stones on CRPF personnel who retaliated by firing rubber bullets on the protesters injuring 3 persons. The injured youth Rashid-ul-Islam, Arif Ahmad and Abid Ahmad were immediately rushed to Baramulla district hospital for treatment. However, a police spokesman denied the reports of Taj Mohiuddin having been stuck by the protesters. He said there was no VIP movement on the road at that point of time. He, however, said that the minister arrived at Sheeri after the incident. However, a local Fayaz Ahmad told Early Times that the CRPF personnel fired upon the protesters to clear the road for Taj Mohiuddin's cavalcade. "Let him deny but the fact is that it was because of him that the three youth were critically injured in the firing," Fayaz said. He said that several hundred protesters had assembled at Sheeri to protest against the hanging of Parliament attack convict M Afzal Guru and the Minister ordered clearing of road for his cavalcade by using force. "Taj is responsible for this dastard act", he said. In a similar incident, Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather's cavalcade was intercepted by angry youth near Humhama when he was on his way to Budgam. Reports said the youth pelted stones on the cavalcade forcing the Minister to return to Srinagar. Nobody was injured in the incident. The authorities today blocked all roads leading to Sopore town, the hometown of Guru, as the hard-line separatist leader Sayed Ali Geelani had called for a march to the town to mark the fourth day of his death However, SSP Baramulla Anand Jain was not available for his comment. The situation elsewhere in the Valley remained by and large peaceful and barring some isolated incidents of stone pelting, no untoward incident was reported from anywhere till this report was filed. "Srinagar city was relatively calm and no untoward incident took place today," a police spokesperson told Early Times. Meanwhile, curfew remained in place for the fourth day today at all the sensitive places in the valley. There was no relaxation in curfew at old city in Srinagar, Sopore, Baramullah, Pattan, Palhalan. The additional force was deployed at vulnerable spots following clashes between protestors and law enforcing agencies. However, authorities today lifted curfew from Ram Munshi Bagh and Raj Bagh areas fully, while it was lifted partially from the areas falling under jurisdiction of Shergarhi, Kothibagh and Sadder police stations in Srinagar city. In curfew bound areas round-the clock ambulances have been made available to ferry sick people from these areas. "Security forces have been advised to treat the identity cards of those maintaining essential services like healthcare, water supplies and electricity as curfew passes and allow their movements through those areas," an official said. All the examinations and interviews scheduled to be held up to February 17 have been postponed by the authorities. |
