Bane or Ban on Rock Band of Kashmir
2/13/2013 12:24:40 AM

R.S.Bali

The outrageous and illegal ban on all girl rock band
"Pragaash" (from darkness to light) of innocent Kashmiri
girls by the Grand Mufti of Kashmir Bashirudin Ahmad after the girls started receiving abusive and hate messages on face book reflects how the cultural terrorism and religious intolerance in Kashmir is slowly and steadily making inroads in the erstwhile rich traditions and values of Kashmir culture .The valley has witnessed 24 long years of turmoil where all the stake holders have made the life of the common people miserable irrespective of religion . Now, when the dawn of new hope was emerging after seeing black and bloody years the Fatwa has put its tight lid on the aspirations of young Kashmiri boys and girls who wanted to shun the path of violence entrusted upon them by an Islamic republic in our neighborhood. Holding guitars, drums and other musical instruments in their hands instead of AK 47 rifles did not go well with the so called custodians of Islam. The Islam which is professed and followed by more than two billion people worldwide is not based on narrow visions. The Mufti`s argument that we should imbibe better values instead of vices does not attract any attention from the civil society of India and even from majority of the Muslims viz-a-viz banning of Band. Music does not inculcate any bad impression in the minds of youth; rather it appeals their youthfulness and satisfies their aesthetic sense. Music singing and dancing is an integral part of our rich traditions of Kashmir from centuries. Grand Mufti forgets this grandeur. We had Habba Khatoon, Lalded, Kailash mehra, Rita koul , Zoon Begum, Raj Begum and others who have had been the torch bearers of Kashmiri music and folk lore. Our daughters and sisters celebrate their Eid, marriages and other festivities with singing and dancing. Nobody has ever objected to this age old tradition. How come that these three teenage girls who were trying to transform and replace the atmosphere of gun and drug addictions among youth of Kashmir with encouraging response from the audience. How musical art concert could damage the Islamic Values. They never resorted to nudity or absurdity. We fail to understand what kind of vision of Islam they want to put forth. In the Islamic countries like Iran, Bangladesh and Pakistan the music and art is flourishing . They do not see a threat to their cultures and traditions by playing music and dancing. If this would have been a trend in Bangladesh then Runa Laila would never have sung the famous song" Duma Dam Mast Kalander. It is really hypocritical. Emperor Akbar being a Muslim had Tansen -the great musician of all the time to perform in his court
The fringe Hindu groups did not like the paintings of great Indian artist FM Hussain who died in exile after being shunned from India. Now this fringe radicalism has taken the toll of these budding music stars who have been sent to oblivion and never to sing again on the soil of Kashmir. Dictates and Fatwa's can suppress the courage but never the lava that has ignited in the hearts of music lovers. These girls were singing a song written by famous Punjabi Muslim Sufi poet Bulleh Shah - a humanist and philosopher of 18th century. It compels us to think about the bigotry approach of these fringe forces who never issued a Fatwa when in 1990 Asia`s biggest Rock Band "Junoon" in Pakistan rendered Bulleh Shah`s poem "Bulleh Ki Jaana". Bulleh Shas`s famous couplet Masjid Dha Day, Mandir Dha day, Dha day Jo Kujh Disda
Par Kissay Da Dil Na Dhawee(n), Rab Dilla(n) wich Wasda. Is a sufficient answer to those forces who does not want to see the Indian civil society to live in communal harmony.
