| Kashmir returns to normalcy, Friday crucial for security agencies | | | Mustansir SRINAGAR, Feb 14: The administration in Kashmir today tried to make all out efforts to ensure violence free Friday which is crucial for law enforcing agencies and even could prove a turning point in the situation especially when the volatile Valley is returning slowly towards normalcy. Though the Kashmir valley is slowly limping towards normalcy after it witnessed violent phase after the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and tomorrow i.e. Friday is the most challenging day for the administration and other law enforcing agencies as well. "If Friday passes peacefully everybody in the administration shall heave a sigh of relief, some observed. "As on today the Valley was by and large peaceful after five days after the hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, although the curfew restrictions remained in force in 10 towns of the Valley as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, police spokesperson said that the curfew had been relaxed in some pockets of the Valley this morning so as to facilitate locals to buy the essential items. "The curfew is in force in some places as a precautionary measure, which includes six police station areas in the city and some towns in rest of the Valley," the spokesperson said. He added that with no major incident of violence anywhere, authorities relaxed curfew for varying durations in all 10 districts, excluding the areas falling under the jurisdiction of five hypersensitive police stations in downtown Srinagar and Baramulla. He said that the curfew was not relaxed in the north Kashmir towns of Sopore, Pattan, Baramulla, Handwara and Bandipora, while in south Kashmir restrictions continued in Shopian, Yaripora and Anantnag town. Curfew also remained in force in old Srinagar city. Meanwhile, there will be no relaxation in curfew tomorrow to avoid any major law and order problem. A senior official in the Divisional administration told Early Times that there will be no relaxation in curfew tomorrow and the people have been asked to stay indoors. According to the official all necessary security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order tomorrow in the Valley. Meanwhile, a senior Minister camping in Srinagar to take stock of situation when contacted said that the Government is hopeful that the Friday passes peacefully and the security situation will be revived tomorrow in the evening and accordingly decision will be taken. Yet another Minister hinted at lifting the curfew completely from most parts of the State from Saturday provided Friday passes off peacefully. Pertinent to mention here that three persons died and over 50 others were injured in clashes between protestors and security forces during protests against Guru's execution. Meanwhile, Kashmir Bar Association today took out a protest march here demanding from Government of India to return the body of Mohammad Afzal Guru. They also alleged that decision to hang Afzal was a political as they jumped the queue to hang Afzal. However, the protest march bid was foiled outside the court premises by the police not allowing them to move towards Lal Chowk. |
