Aggressive political posturing to appease vote bank
Omar's return of Guru's body salvo
2/15/2013 12:40:49 AM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah seems to have learnt a lesson or two on aggressive 'political posturing' from the prevailing political atmosphere across the country. He is seemingly doing the same to keep the vote bank in Kashmir intact.
Even a primary class child would tell him to explain what he is doing with a party, which in the eyes of people of Kashmir valley hanged Afzal Guru. Congress Government issued the order for hanging of Afzal Guru and it was widely being speculated that Omar would give up the relationship with Congress. But he preferred otherwise, clamped curfew across the Valley, got his State police into action and managed peace on deserted roads.
It is widely believed that he was part of the decision making process which resulted in hanging of Afzal Guru. After hanging, it was believed that he would defend the decision and instead of resorting to appeasement politics would justify Guru's hanging since he is and was part of UPA before as well as after the hanging. Nothing has changed in Jammu and Kashmir. The only thing is Omar trying to deceive self.
Kashmir has changed a lot and they can see through double standards and deceit. They need not to be told what has been done and who has done it. If Omar knew well in advance that Guru was to be hanged, why he not impressed upon the Union Government not to go ahead with this decision. Commoners do not leave a word while saying that Omar is playing a politics of aggressive political posturing.
They maintain that if State Government has forwarded a representation from Guru's family to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) seeking return of the terrorist's body, which was buried inside Delhi's Tihar Central Jail after he was hanged on Saturday, does it mean that he disapproves of what Congress did. If it is so, then what Omar and his father Farooq Abdullah are doing in UPA, say the commoners.
They seek an explanation and want Omar to respond. Regarding the handing over of Guru's body to his family for last rites, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said, "We have received representation. I received a copy of the representation that was addressed to the DC (District Collector) of Baramulla. I have asked for that representation to be forwarded to the Government of India. It's part of an ongoing discussion with them. Beyond that, I don't want to say anything."
This statement raises painful questions about how Congress has been maintaining a discreet silence. Abdullah said that his Government is dealing with the situation in the aftermath of Guru's execution, and did not agree with the view that developments had reached a boiling point in Kashmir. "I would not use words like boiling up. Yes, we had a difficult week or so to deal with in the aftermath of the execution of Afzal Guru. We are continuing to deal with that situation. It's had fallout on our tourism numbers already. We have seen a reduction in arrivals; we have seen a spate of cancellations."
Commenting on JKLF chief Yasin Malik sharing stage with 26/11 Mumbai attacks conspirator Hafiz Saeed, Abdullah said, "Yasin Malik has made a mistake of being caught in photos but not of protest. There is nothing new in this. Yasin Malik should not be arrested for this issue. Why the government shouldn't have arrested him earlier? He has told this before also that he has met Hafiz Saeed many times before."
