| Ahead of Amargarh Deelina Power Grid inauguration , 3 towers of PDD collapse | | Inquiry ordered | | SUMIT SHARMA Jammu, Feb 17: While scandal over alleged use of sub standard material in the towers of PDD in district Poonch is yet to die down, another similar discrepancy erupted at Magam in district Budgam where three towers of PDD collapsed after developing cracks. The incident occurred when Power Development Department was all set to inaugurate Amargarh Deelina Power Grid situated in district Baramulla. Principal Secretary Power A.K Mehta confirmed the reports and said that an inquiry in this connection has been ordered. Official sources said that with the collapse of tower, the 220 KV transmission tower line has been snapped. The new power grid project was onus by PMRP while the foundation of the towers was laid by PDD system operation wing of Kashmir and their erection was done by ECI Company. Sources said that collapsing of towers indicated sub standard material might have been used as in case of Poonch district in Jammu. The Deelina Power Grid project was started in the year 2008 and had to be accomplished before 2010 and when finally stage was set for its inauguration after the five years of initiation, the towers holding 220 KV wire collapsed. This incident of tower collapse dented public exchequer to crores of rupees, official sources said. Pertinent to mention here that the Deelina tower scam came a couple of days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah suspended 13 officers of Power Development Department (PDD), who were responsible for installation of sub standard quality transmission towers and electric poles in the border district of Poonch, which were uprooted and damaged with normal snowfall on January 18 leading to disruption of power supply in most parts of the district, which was now being fed from 33 KV Mendhar in rotation. |
