| MeT Deptt predicts rains, snowfall on Feb 27 & 28 | | Srinagar-Jammu Highway remains closed | | early times report Srinagar, Feb 23, Current News Service (CNS): Predicting heavy rains and snowfall on 27th and 28th of this month, Metrological Department Saturday said that weather will improve Sunday onwards; however on Tuesday Valley may likely witness heavy snowfall. Meanwhile Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained closed for the second day on Saturday even as fresh snowfall across Kashmir prompted authorities to issue an avalanche warning in higher reaches of the Valley. The upper reaches and plains of Kashmir got fresh rains and bringing down the day and time temperatures across the Valley by couple of degrees. According to reports, apart from Srinagar,Kupwara, Budgam, Shopian, Pulwamma, Anantnag, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Baram-ullah districts heavy snowfall during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday while rest of the Valley was lashed by light to moderate rains, an official of the Met department said. Gulmarag, Sonamarag, Pahalgam and Khansahab area of Budgam witnessed heavy snowfall due to which the electricity in these areas were badly affected. Director MeT, Sonam Lotus told CNS that the day temperature dropped by a couple of notches across the Valley while the minimum temperature saw an upward movement on Friday night. "Pahalgam in South Kashmir received snowfall equivalent to 46.6 mm of rainfall followed by Kupwara (44.0-mm), Koke-rnag (40.6 mm) and Gulmarg skiing resort (35.0 mm) in North Kashmir," he said and added that Kashmir Valley may likely receive heavy snowfall on on 27th and 28th of this month. Kargil was the coldest recorded place in the State at minus 11.0 degrees Celsius; Leh town saw the mercury rise to minus 5.0 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained closed for the second day on Saturday. SSP Traffic Highway, Virender Sharma told CNS that Jam-mu-Srinagar Highway is closed for vehicular traffic due to continuous snowfall on either side of the Jawahar tunnel in South Kashmir. "The snowfall is hampering the efforts of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and other agencies concerned to clear the road. We are on the job and hopefully the High Way will be through for traffic very soon," Sharma said. |
