| ‘SKEWPY could not benefit 20% of the unemployed’ | | | Bashir Assad JAMMU, Mar 4: The Sher-e-Kashmir Employment and Welfare Program for the youth of the State has got punctured as the beneficiaries under Voluntary Service Allowance are not even 20% of the unemployed educated youth whose number has crossed six lakh mark in 2012. While having a cursory look on the figures provided by the Government in a written reply to a question tabled by MLA, Ashwani Kumar in the House, it becomes abundantly clear that the beneficiaries under VSA is less than 50, 000 while the number of educated unemployed youth registered with the employment exchange is above six lakh. It merits a mention here that the Government ever since the scheme was launched has been claiming that the SKEWPY has done a commendable job in addressing the unemployment problem the State has was confronted with. SKEWPY which was launched with much fanfare envisages interim relief in the form of Voluntary Services Allowances (VSA) to provide continuous allowance to the unemployed youth till they get employment. But the benefits of the scheme could not reach to the deserving on one hand while on the other hand, financial crunch and non availability of funds under the scheme has rendered thousands of youth jobless. The district wise figures of the VSA beneficiaries as provided by the Government are in itself an admission of the failure of the scheme. |
