| Council holds discussion on 'Afzal' | | PDP accuses coalition Govt of handling Afzal's hanging mysteriously | | Navneet Dubey
Jammu, Mar 4: After ruckus by opposition PDP and Panthers Party members seeking discussion under adjournment motions, Legislative Council Chairman admitted three motions today. As soon as proceedings for the day started, PDP members Nizam-ud-Din Khatana, Syed Asgar Ali, Mohd. Ashraf Mir and Panthers Party member Rafiq Shah stood on their seats demanding suspension of normal business to hold discussion under their respective adjournment motions. While the PDP members were demanding suspension of routine businesses to discuss the execution of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and return of his body to the family. Panthers Party moved adjournment motion regarding death of a Kashmiri student in Hyderabad. Congress members Jugal Kishore too stood on his seat expressing concern over loss caused to men and material by the landslide in Panchari. Another congress member Ravinder Sharma raised the issues about the killing of two IRP constables in the valley. On Afzal Guru issue, Ravinder pointed out that the issue is beyond the jurisdiction of Jammu and Kashmir government and added some vested interests are misleading the people in the valley. Council Chairman Amrit Malhotra in order to delve on the three adjournment motions, adjourned the house for 15 minutes. When house resumed, Chairman admitted all the three motions are admitted and informed that one speaker from the parties will get five minutes to speak on the motion. While speaking in the motion PDP member Asgar Ali castigated state government and said, "The state government has handled the hanging of Afzal Guru in very mysterious manner. The sentiments of Afzal's family should have been taken care of. How Afzal Guru who was 28th in list was hanged on first number. National Conference is part and parcel in government and they have say in Afzal's hanging. His mortal remains must be returned to the family. Government should a make a statement that in spite of prior knowledge about Afzal's hanging, why they were not able to prevail upon central government to stop the hanging". NC member Khalid Najeed Surawardy while speaking on the motion stressed that root cause of Jammu and Kashmir problem needs to be addressed. "Till the issue of Jammu and Kashmir remains unresolved the situations like these will keep on emerging. Jammu and Kashmir has been turned as an election ring. The decision was taken looking into political considerations." He questioned how Afzal Guru got capital punishment on circumstantial evidence? "State government has no direct involvement in the issue as matter was with central government and there is no need to take the issue with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, " he added. On this PDP member Mohd. Ashraf Mir took strong exception and pointed out, "Even Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the issue was discussed with Omar Abdullah". Later minister for Planning and Development, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra while replying to the adjournment motions moved by Syed Asgar Ali, Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardhy and Syed Rafiq Shah said that the Chief Minister tackled the tense situation arisen in the valley after the hanging of Afzal Guru in a very good manner avoiding loss of precious lives adding that the Chief Minister has already taken up the matter with the Prime Minister regarding handing over the body of Afzal Guru to the family. Rafiq Shah while speaking on the motion on the death of a Kashmiri student in Hyderabad alleged that after the death of Afzal Guru, Kashmiri students were victimized in all over the country and demanded detailed investigation in the matter. |
