ET Plus Report Jammu, Mar 12: It was reflective of the low of competitive politics being played out in the House on the body of Afzal Guru, convicted and hanged for Parliament attack. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mir Saifullah while making a statement in the House did exactly the same by calling him Guru Sahib. The Jammu based parties, including BJP and Panthers Party, rightly objected to and this resulted in heated exchanges between Members of the two parties. Omar being head of the State should have known the consequences and repercussions of terming Guru a Sahib, the adjective used for Gentleman, who has sound and credible standing in a society. Guru, what ever be the voices and claims of pseudo- human right activists, has been convicted by the highest court of the land. Such a person can't be called a gentleman. If the same line is extended that person accused of Delhi gang rape, who had though hanged himself, should also be said Ram Singh Sahib. Had any Minister used such word for him, he would invite wrath of the members and the society. But Omar, playing to the gallery, didn't care to think about the sensitivity of the people of Jammu region, and went on to say this, just to score a point over PDP. Even PDP can't be spared for calling him a Sahib, but it can't be accepted by the Chief Minister. Omar Abdullah by using such words and terms had only given credibility to the anger of protestors across the Kashmir and has in a sense validated there anti-people sentiments. PDP had been all along saying that Abdullah family is only interested in creating an atmosphere of unrest in the State so that it can blackmail the Centre to be in chair by projecting itself as the sole guardian of Indian Constitution in the State. This remark has only given credence to the allegations of PDP but it could cost NC its oxygen (Cong) which will not take it lightly. |
