| Coalition has lost moral, ethical right to govern: Mufti | | 'PDP would not return to LA' | | ET Plus Report
Jammu, Mar 17: Coming down heavily on the coalition government today, former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said that the coalition was surviving only due to numbers while it had lost the moral and ethical right to govern the state. Speaking at the rally of the card holders of the Gandhinagar Assembly constituency at Party office here, Mufti cautioned that the people of the state were facing unprecedented difficulties and they had anger and rage against the grave governance deficit that prevailed across the state. "The state is using its authority only to contain the anger of the people through repression" Mufti asserted. Making a reference to his parties decision to boycott the ongoing Budget Session of the state legislature, Mufti said, "the challenge facing the state at present as this government had compromised the authority of institutions like the legislature and eroded their credibility. The assembly has been turned into a mock house with government instead of getting worried by opposition boycott feeling relieved at what it considers as a good riddance" he said maintaining that this attitude would push people further away from democratic system. Commenting on the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and situation that succeeded the event, Mufti termed Guru's hanging as thoughtless decision that could have been avoided if the government or the legislature had responded in time. "Government, is unable to think beyond curfew, guns, chilli bombs and large scale arrests as the only options and is closing the doors of a democratic engagement. On the other hand it wants to run the legislature without even a reference to the reign of terror and repression it has let loose on people" he said. He reiterated his party's commitment to o strive for mobilisation of public opinion so that the state could revert to the path of peace, dignity and development that PDP initiated after 2002 elections. He said the political parties will have to remain accountable to the people who vote them into power and that alone could ensure public welfare.
