| JU celebrates ‘tree-talk’ to mark World Arbor Day | | | et plus report Jammu, Mar 21: On World Arbor Day Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu Professor Mohan Paul Singh Ishar expressed his views regarding the indispensable association of nature with human beings. In his remarks he said that he has imbibed the love and care for plants from his parents and this passion keep him fresh and energetic in all his endeavours. He elaborated that the traditional knowledge related to plants extracted from the locals can be a boon for the modern science for pharmaceutical research and can help fulfilling the needs of the growing population. The VC assured that all out efforts would be made to bring more greenery and beauty on the Campus. Lauding the efforts of gardeners and the staff of the Arboriculture and Landscaping departments Lida Ishar, who was special guest on the occasion shared the relevance of Arbor day related it with the “NawRuz” a new year festival in Iranian/ Persian Calendar. She divulged in detail that the trees provide endless benefits, including shade, recreation, food and building products, wildlife habitat, oxygen production, and carbon dioxide uptake and exhorted upon the people to nurture them like their children. Chief Conservator of Forests and noted environmentalist and Sahitya academy awardee O P Sharma Vidyarthi (IFS) was the resource person and key speaker. Speaking on the occasion, Sharma informed that the Arbor Day which literally means, “Tree Day” was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a naturalist and journalist in Nebraska. In India, the day is celebrated on 21st March every year. |
