Kishtwar, July 30: Heavy rains today created havoc in many parts of Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas, causing massive damages to public property and business units situated along road stretch from
Malipath to Sangrabata. The rain water entered into several residential houses and shops, located at bus stand Kishtwar, Shaheedi Road Kishtwar and Sangrabata, resulting into loss of property. As soon as the rain stopped large number of people held protest at bus stand, Sangrabata and Shaheedi Road against the GREF authorities holding them responsible for ill maintenance of road and drainage all
along the National Highway.
The agitating people alleged that despite repeated request for construction of proper drain on both sides of the road, GREF authorities failed to address the problem since last over one decade as a result of which the residential houses situated all along the road have suffered massive damages due to seepage of drain water. The protesters block the main road for more than 3 hours and lifted the blockade only after assurance of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Saleem Mohammad Chowdhary.
DDC assured the agitating people that he would took up the matter with the senior officers of GREF for blacktopping of the road as well as construction of proper drain. Later GREF officials put their men and
machinery into service for clearance of garbage from city drains. Deputy Commissioner also directed Tehsildar Kishtwar to prepare a detail report about the damages so that the same could be taken up
with higher authorities of GREF for compensation. Later DC Kishtwar also held a meeting with leaders of various trade union organizations regarding widening and blacktopping of road from Malipath to Petrol Pump. Meanwhile the shopkeepers who had suffered damages due to negligence of GREF have moved an application before the police for registration of an FIR against the GREF authorities for their negligence.
