Dithering govt makes Governor too to make 'false' commitments
ULB polls: BJP lodges protest again, PDP's outcry goes in vain

ET Report
JAMMU, July 30: NC led coalition Government has crossed all limits of eroding its credibility and trustworthiness on all aspects of governance as it is tumbling and faltering badly on even its own commitments and assurances which continue to remain farfetched. What agonizes most is that the Government has hurt the constitutional sanctity of the person of no less stature than the Governor of the state in letting him announce and make commitment on certain issues on which the Government is still dithering and indecisive.
Governor NN Vohra in his address to the joint legislature last year made a specific point that Urban Local Bodies polls would be held by April in the state, a virtual announcement in which one saw authenticity as it was Governor who made this. Over a year on, the coalition is still wavering with allies waving a blame game card suggesting either of the two parties NC or Congress is not willing nor prepared for it.
As an opposition party BJP justifiably so, lodged a strong protest today over delay in holding elections for Urban Local Bodies on which the NC led coalition Government made a number of promises and commitments during the last two years. Pending for the last over three years now, PDP also raised the matter umpteenth times to 'remind' the Government of its commitments made by the Chief Minister even on the floor of the Legislature last year when he announced the month too for conducting the polls. But as always it has fallen on deaf ears as the Government is making these commitments only to befool the masses and engage them in false hopes.
It was the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who made this commitment first that ULB polls would be conducted 'soon' and it was only a matter of time that would determine the schedule of elections for municipal bodies. Government sounded firm and resolute over this issue when it made a mention of its commitment again and even mentioned the month in the address which was read by the Governor NN Vohra on the first day of budget session of Assembly last year. But this too has turned into a mockery and a blatant lie as neither last year nor this year till date any substantive step has been taken that would reaffirm the impression that Government means business and the delay was only due to some unavoidable circumstances.
While last year Chief Minister gave the pretext of tourism season being on peak , the polls had to be deferred . Few months later when nothing happened, NC blamed Congress for delay and Congress did just the opposite, though no straight and direct statement came forth from either of the two parties. However, J&K PCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz did come out with a statement this year in March after Coordination Committee meeting that ULB polls would be conducted soon and that Congress was firm on it , stating June end as the tentative deadline. There is no word from any quarter as yet. Sources from within the both parties have it to say that Government has changed the mind and polls would not be conducted even this year.
