Death of Amarnath pilgrim sparks protest, Jammu-Poonch road blocked

Rajouri, July 30: Sunderbani residents blocked Jammu-Poonch highway for more than three hours to protest the death of a Shri Amar Nath pilgrim from Sunderbani who was injured in a stone pelting in Kashmir during bandh call given to protest the killing of four civilians by the BSF in Gool Ramban district in this July. The deceased identified namely as Ravi Kumar s/o Durga Dass r/o Sunderbani had gone to pay obeisance at the cave but was injured in stone pelting and was admitted in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Srinagar where he was on ventilator but succumbed to his grievous injuries toda. As the news of his death reached to Sunderbani it spontaneously sparked large scale protests at Sunderbani, Rajouri, Kalakot, Noushera etc. At Rajouri activists of various Hindu organizations burnt the effigy of Chief Minister and demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation and a government job for one family member. "In case government failed to concede our demands a large scale agitation will be started in the near future" said Karan Thakur, Bajrang Dal president Rajouri-Poonch. Here it needs to mentioned that Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rajouri FC Bhagat has visited the the injured undergoing treatment at SKIMS to take stock of the treatment being provided to Ravi on July 26, following allegations atht he was not given proper treatment at SKIMS. Meanwhile a deputation of office holders of VHP, Bajrang Dal , BJP etc lead by senior most BJP leader Kuldeep Raj Gupta met in the evening with DC Rajouri and demanded suitable compensation for the family of Ravi. "I have told them that Rs2 lakh has already been sanctioned for the family. I am in constant touch with the higher authorities and in case they agreed for further compensation that will be declared tomorrow" said DC Rajouri further extending heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. DC Rajouri also informed that senior civil and police officers are camping at Sunderbani to tackle any untoward incidents if any takes place. He also informed that people have lifted the dharna and highway has been thrown open for vehicles. Meanwhile elaborate security arrangements have been made in Rajouri as the body of Ravi was on way to Sunderbani from Sringar via Mughal Road which reportedly will pass Rajouri during late night hours. "Civil administration has conveyed the demands of protestors to the higher authorities for due consideration" said Purshotam Sharma, ASP and Rajinder Khajuria , SDM who are camping at Sunderbani.
