| Protest against power cuts, irregular drinking water supply held | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 30: Workers of Dogra Front and Shiv Sena under the leadership of Ashok Gupta protested against power cuts and irregular drinking water supply in Jammu. The protesters were holding lanterns, mattkas and fans in their hands signifying the lack of responsibility on part of government departments. "When the people are paying their charges for the electricity why there is no electricity available," they complained. "Crores of rupees in the form of bills of bureaucrats and ministers are pending but still they are enjoying 24 hours special line and on the contrary people who are paying their bills on time are deprived of electricity for five hours a day," they said. Addressing the protesters Gupta demanded construction of another receiving station of 50 mva at Janipur to tide over the power crisis in the Jammu constituency. He warned the Government that if power supply does not improve the people will not pay power tariff. Gupta in an appeal to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh urged him to handover all the NHPC hydro electric projects constructed in J&K to the State in view of the power crisis faced by the people here. Holding the Chief Minister responsible for power crisis in Jammu region, Gupta said as power minister he failed to initiate action to improve the power supply in the State. He stated that the power supply to Jammu region has been further curtailed during 2012-13 due to highly prejudicial and callous approach of helmsmen. The state government is hiking power tariff after every few months but are unable to provide electricity which is adding to the sufferings of people in the state. The government's decision of increasing power tariff is bereft of logic and rationale as the power department is yet to improve power supply position both in the urban and rural areas. The prominent workers who participated at the time of protest were Vikram Shrma, Bansi Lal, Puri Singh, Mukesh Sharma and Munshi Lal. |
