| Rajouri shows way, forces Govt to enhance ex-gratia | | | Et Report
Jammu, July 31 : The tension and protests in Rajouri after the death Ravi Kant, resident of Rajouri, in stone pelting at Ramban, forced the government to enhance the ex-gratia from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Ravi Kant had gone on Shri Amarnath pilgrimage when he got injured in stone pelting at Ramban and died in a Srinagar hospital. The government first as a customary official routine had announced Rs 2 lakh to his family. The decision of government was seen as in-sensitive approach as the same government had earlier announced Rs 5 lakh to people in Kashmir who had died in stone-pelting incidents and had even recruited stone pelters in the state police. The reaction was bound to come and Rajouri being a ultra sensitive to these issues erupted in violence. The people blocked the highway and demanded a ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh. Sensing more trouble the local leaders put the matter before their representatives and the matter was cleared in the cabinet meeting. Rajouri has always polarized on these issues and only last years, there was large scale violence and disturbance during clashes first between two communities and then between Hindus and state police after which the DC and SSP was shifted. The Hindu organization had already raised this issue. The initial approach of government reflected the jaundiced approach it has towards the Jammu region. The Chief Minister is first to visit to any place where a common citizen had died but he doesn't do here in Jammu. The CM last evening announced to fund the entire college fee of local guy who wished to pursue course in Mayo College. The same CM didn't even visit the place of local Jammu cricketer and didn't even sanction any thing to him but on the contrary PDP president Mehbooba Mufti visited his place and even congratulated him. The NC had always treated Jammu region as step cousin and even if it does, which is the right of the region, it does so in a patronizing attitude. This has hurt the sentiments of the Jammu region and it has cost the NC considerably and this time also its bound to happened again. |
