Protests in Shopian, Kulgam

Srinagar, Sept 8: Massive protests were witnessed in various areas of Kulgam and Shopian districts of the South Kashmir even as the main towns in the districts were placed under strict curfew. Protests broke out in Kulgam when the third youth killed in yesterday's firing incident was also identified as civilian, namely, Tariq Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Nabi Mir, resident of Okay Kulgam. The other two persons identified yesterday were residents of the Baba Mohallah and Zainpora of Shopian. Curfew was imposed in Kulgam, Zainapora and Shopian police stations early on Sunday. "Early in the morning announcement that curfew had been imposed." Notwithstanding the strict restrictions people of the Baba Mohala, one of the deceased, Tawseef Ahamd Bhat's native village came out of their houses and shouted slogans against yesterday's killings. The protesters turned angry and violent clashes broke out at various places. Police and CRPF personnel deployed heavily used tear smoke shells and aerial firing to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, hundreds of men, women and children staged a sit-in outside the CRPF camp at Gagren, where the firing incident took place yesterday. People from the adjacent areas of Memender, Gagren and other areas of Shopian started marching towards the camp early on Sunday. Protesters were demanding that the camp be shifted from the area. "CRPF men stationed in this camp have been harassing the people for past many years. They have resorted to unprovoked firing on many occasions. We demand this camp should be shifted immediately," protesters said. Police said that the "sit-in is peaceful and protesters are sitting peacefully outside the camp". However, there was relatively little effect of the separatist strike call in the Srinagar city. Though there was no great vehicular movement and only a few shops could be seen open, however, the activity was appreciative considering that it was a Sunday. Pertinently, four persons were killed in the CRPF firing yesterday in Gargan area of Shopian. While the two of the dead were identified yesterday as Tawseef Ahmad Bhat, 18, son of Gulam Muhammad Bhat, resident of Baba Mohallah Shopian and Muhammad Yousuf resident of Durpora, Zainpora (a labourer), the third youth was identified only today as Tariq Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Nabi Mir resident of Okay, Kulgam. Another youth Aadil Ahmad Wachkoo son of Muhammad Ayub Wachkoo, resident of Bona Bazaar Shopian got injured critically in the incident. The police are claiming that the two of the four persons killed were militants; however, refuting the police claims the locals said that the persons were civilians.
