Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 25: BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is likely to mar the chances of the Congress party to emerge as the single largest party in the State after next Assembly elections. The Congress has already gone into the huddle and is likely to put Ghulam Nabi Azad as point man in the State to limit the damages of Modi effect.
Modi is coming on Dec 1 to address a public rally in Jammu. His visit is likely to enthuse party cadre and could also trigger a political wave in the favour of the party. It could be second life for the State unit of the party which has been reduced to just four members party in the State Assembly after its seven MLAs were expelled for anti-party activities.
There was every possibility of the State BJP drawing a blank or at the best get just one seat in the next Assembly elections before the arrival of the Modi on the scene. But now the party is enthused and the reason for it is that it will seek vote in the name of Modi which can make huge difference in the backdrop of a strong anti-Government and anti-Congress wave sweeping the country.
It has put the State unit of the Congress in a tight spot. Until the announcement of Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate the Congress was quite hopeful of adding to its existing tally. It was sure of winning maximum seats in Jammu region especially after BJP was virtually discredited after its MLAs supported the Government candidate in the MLC elections.
But now the situation has changed and party knows that strong Modi wave which is moving even in the rural areas could undo its all the hard work and also mar its chances.
It's for this reason the party is contemplating to put Azad as the point man of the party. Azad during his tenure as the CM had earned the respect and admiration of Jammu region in particular.
Azad after the last elections in which BJP got unprecedented 11 seats had said it's not the BJP that had won but it's Jammu that had lost. It might, however, repeat as people of Jammu feel they have not been treated equally in NC headed Government for the last five-year.
