| Candidates allege swindling in security refund | | More shame for BOPEE | | Mustansir Srinagar, Nov 25: The candidates having qualified Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission in polytechnic colleges today blamed the BOPEE authorities of duping them by deducting Rs. 500 from the security deposit of Rs. 5000 as counseling fee which according to them is unwarranted and unheard of. According to the insiders, the candidates who qualified the CET test were told by BOPEE to deposit Rs. 5000 in shape of Demand Draft before appearing for counseling. They said after the streams and colleges were allotted to the candidates, the BOPEE refunded only Rs. 4500 each to the candidates deducting Rs. 500 as counseling fee. This unwarranted deduction has invited severe criticism from the candidates as well as by other stake holders. An official of BOPEE on conditions of anonymity told Early Times that five thousand rupees realized from each candidate having qualified the CET is actually the security deposit out of which Rs. 4500 are refunded while as Rs. 500 are deducted as counseling fee from each student. When contacted Chairman BOPEE, Professor RD Sharma said that out of Rs. 5000 realized from each successful candidate, Rs. 4500 are in shape of security deposit and Rs. 500 are deduced from the total amount as Counseling fee. "This is totally a transparent exercise and there is no reason at all to cast doubt on this transparent process of admission," Sharma said. He said the security deposit is refunded only after the colleges send the list of candidates admitted in different streams. "It has to be done after the completion of admission process and after the colleges send us the list of candidates admitted in each stream," Sharma said. BOPEE chairman said the colleges have started sending list of the admitted candidates and the security deposit will be refunded only after all the colleges furnish the list of admitted candidates to the BOPEE. However, the candidates have been raising eye brows over the legality of deducting Rs. 500 from the security deposit of each student. "They didn't disclose this at the time of depositing the amount that Rs. 500 will be deducted from the amount. We were told to deposit Rs. 5000 as security deposit which is refundable but now they are deducting Rs. 500 from the amount as counseling which is something unheard of," said a candidate. |
