| Sonia, Rahul opposed to altering tie-up with NC | | | Et Report
Jammu, Nov 25: The Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir is divided between two groups, one keen to retain alliance with the National Confer ence and the other in favour of reviving the much successful experiment of forging alliance with the PDP. Sources within the Congress say that majority of senior leaders want to repeat the alliance with the PDP. According to these sources even there is division in the Congress high command where a number of top party leaders support those who argue in favour of reframing alliance with the PDP. Sources said that the five year old political arrangement would have been altered in Jammu and Kashmir by forging alliance with the PDP but the plan was shelved because of support Omar Abdullah has been receiving from Rahul Gandhi. Reports said that at one stage even S onia Gandhi had supported those wishing to revive links with the PDP but she was persuaded by her son,Rahul Gandhi,to allow mar Abdullah to complete his six-year term as he was going "well" as Chief Minister. The only issue where the senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress are on the same page pertains to pre-poll alliance. Majority of congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir want that there should be no pre-poll alliance with the NC so that the Congress contested the Assembly election on its own on the plea that going alone in the battle of ballot the Congress could do well in its traditional strong hold, the Jammu region. Reports said that the Muftis had been interested in having an alliance with the Congress but Omar Abdullah, who is scare of this arrangement, has secured assurance from Rahul Gandhi that the five-year old political arrangement would not be altered. Hence the Muftis have decided to strengthen the PDP not only in the Kashmir valley but in the Jammu region too. The father-daughter duo wants to make the PDP a strong political party that could fight against any injustice to people in the state. However, nothing definite can be said about the possibility of new equations after the Assembly election results. If the NC"s performance was quite poor and the Congress was forced to remain conent with bagging 10 to 15 seats it may have no other option but to gon for alliance with the PDP for the purpose of Government making. |
