SRINAGAR, Dec 1: People of South Kashmir's hilly district of Shopian are up in protest against the state government as the all important position of Naib Tehsildar at the district headquarter is lying vacant over the past six months or so. A group of residents of the Shopian district told Early Times that Shopian district headquarter is without Naib Tehsildar since last six months. The residents said that they are facing numerous problems with respect to the various matters related to the Revenue department adding that repeated pleas in this regard have fallen on deaf ears.
"Six months back following some complaint Naib Tehsildar, Shopian was attached to the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and since then our district headquarter is without a Naib Tehsildar. This shows callousness on part of the state government and how can expect the people at helm to solve basic problems of common masses," said the residents. The people are quite aghast over the state government's decision to hand over the charge of Naib Tehsildar, Shopian to Naib Tehsildar, Kapran. The residents said that it would not be possible for Naib Tehsildar, Kapran to do justice with the job following the additional charge of Naib Tehsildar, Shopian. "The additional charge syndrome has afflicted the functioning of government at various levels. Same has been done with respect to the position of Naib Tehsildar, Shopian. Naib Tehsildar, Kapran has to look after a huge area and he has been given the additional charge as Naib Tehsildar, Shopian. In this way the Naib Tehsildar would neither be able to perform his role at Kapran nor at Shopian," said the residents. The residents said that absence of Naib Tehsildar leads to inordinate delay in issuance of Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) to the citizens more so to those who are in dire need of the same. They said people belonging to various categories are also facing difficulties in getting PRC since the concerned Naib Tehsildar is not present at the district headquarter. "Students are in dire need of the PRC and they have to run from pillar to post since the Naib Tehsildar is not available at the district headquarter. Several delegations met the Deputy Commissioner, Bashir Ahmad Bhat and sought immediate relief. However, as on date we continue to suffer as the Naib Tehsildar is yet to be put in place at the district headquarter," said the residents. The residents said that instead of offering lip service the concerned stake holders should issue immediate orders for the permanent placement of a Naib Tehsildar for Shopian district headquarter.
They said this would come as a great relief for the people of the district and they would be able to accomplish their unfinished tasks to a great extent.
