| Pre-poll security to be reviewed by state officials with Union Home Ministry authorities | | | ET Report Jammu, Dec 1:Senior functionaries of the state Government and those manning the police and the paramilitary forces plan to discuss with men who matter in the union Home Ministry the overall security scenario that could emerge during the pre-poll period in Jammu and Kashmir so that the centre could assist the state in upgrading the security grid. This state-centre meeting on the issue is likely to t ake place I n New Delhi after the completion of the Assembly elections in five states.Official sources said that the need for a detailed review of the security scenario had risen following recent statements from the Director General Police, Ashok Prfasad, and the special Director Genral CRPF, D. K. Pathak,in which they expressed apprehensions on possible hike I n the level of militancy related activities and violence.Both Prasad and Pathak have stated, separately, that there was possibility of militants carrying oujt attacks on the security convoys,pickets and camps. Official reports have revealed that as many as 50 security personnel were killed in attacks by the militants in various areas in the state during the last 11 months. Reports said that though the level of militancy related violence had declined during the year when compared to the last year,more security personnel lost their lives in armed attacks by the militants during the current year.Both Pathan and Prasad apprehend increase in infiltration bids by militants from across the LOC and the IB soon after the Lok Sabha and the Assembly poll schedule was announced.It is in this context that the state required additional companies of paramilitary forces for preventing militants from disrupting the pre-poll campaign and the polling itself.Besides redploying those companies of paramilitary forces,that had been withdrawn for posting in election bound states,the state woulod require atleast 50 companies of CRPF. These details and modalities would be discussed in Delhi by the state authorities during their meetings with Union Home Ministry functionaries.Official circles said that the security forces have to tackle militants on one hand and initiate steps that could prevent separatists from enforcing their call for poll boycott. |
