| Omar forces Farooq to put his foot in the mouth over sexist remark | | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, Dec 6: Taking cognizance of criticism and wrath of the people across the country on social media over sexist remarks of Dr Farooq Abdullah about woman, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah forced his father to apologize for his comments. As the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and president of National Conference, Dr Farooq Abdullah while talking to reporters in New Delhi said that men were scared of talking to women because they feared landing up in jail, Omar Abdullah was flooded with criticism by his followers on social media and he asked his father to apologize for the same. Farooq Abdullah while talking to reporters about the case of retired Supreme Court judge AK Ganguly who on Thursday was indicted by Apex court for sexually harassing a woman who was working as an intern with him had said, "now a days we (men) are even afraid of talking to girls and we (men) are scared now of appointing women secretaries." Dr Farooq had also said that though incidents of rape have increased in the country, it was the fault of the society as a whole, that wants only boys. The said sexist comments of Union Minister raked up a controversy across the country and not only social activists and opposition leaders like Bhartiya Janata Party leader Simriti Irani, renowned social activist Kiran Bedi, Women and Child Welfare Minister Krishna Tirath and many other writers and politicians termed the comments of Dr Farooq Abdullah as inappropriate, but also comments of Farooq Abdullah on various social networking sites like facebook and Twitter was grinded like wheat in a mill is grinded. After facing the wrath of people across the country on various social networking sites for the comments of his father about woman folk, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said he hoped his father would immediately apologize for his comments on women fraternity and added that such comments were most likely made in a lighter vein and not with an intention of hurting anybody. Reacting to the flood of criticism leveled against Farooq Abdullah over his sexist comment against women, Omar Abdullah on his micro blogging twitter site today wrote: "I am sure the attempt wasn't to trivialize important issue of women's security, so I hope dad apologizes for the misplaced attempt at humour". Pertinently few hours after Chief Minister conveyed his father through his popular Twitter communiqué mode to apologize ,National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah while apologizing today said that he apologized for whatever he has said and added that "I apologize if I said something I did not mean." Dr Farooq Abdullah however, blamed media for presenting his comment in a wrong way among the general public and also added that it is media only which has given his simple comment the colour of a fast moving storm. |
