| Congress deflates pre-poll alliance balloon | | Set to contest all six LS seats | | Bashir Assad JAMMU, Dec 6: A day after National Conference announced its candidates for Parliamentary elections from three seats of Valley, ignoring Congress's appeals of sparing at least one seat for it, Congress asserted that it would put up candidates in all six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, ruling out alliance with its coalition partner during the upcoming Parliamentary polls. "We are not looking for alliance partners. We will put up candidates in all six Parliamentary seats in the state and there will be no tie up with National Conference," MLC, Ghulam Nabi Monga told Early times on phone from Delhi. Monga said that the state unit of the Congress party is of the considered view that the party should go alone in the Parliamentary elections putting up candidates for all the six seats and setting a target to win all the six because it has bright chances to perform well. Meanwhile, PCC President, Prof Saif-ud-Din arrived in Srinagar this afternoon to take stock of the situation that has arisen after its coalition partner announced its candidates for three Kashmir seats. Sources said Soz rushed to Srinagar this afternoon from Delhi to discuss the political situation with his party leaders and workers. They said that many Congress leaders from Jammu also flew to Srinagar this afternoon to take part in parleys with Soz. On the other hand senior Congress leaders owing loyalty to Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad flew to Delhi this afternoon to discuss the prevailing situation with Azad. Sources said senior Congress leaders including Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand and other leaders were summoned to Delhi by Azad to seek their comments on fielding candidates for all the six J&K seats. Sources further averred that the Congress leaders loyal to Azad were enthusiastic to convey their view point to Azad on the issue and most of them were of the opinion that Congress should go alone to the Loke Sabha elections. Sources said the party has identified the districts, where it was placed in a good position and where it required to work very hard to meet the challenge of "two regional parties of Kashmir" and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The indications to this effect were clearly given by a senior Congress leader while talking to Early Times. Virtually ruling out any pre-poll alliance with National Conference, the senior Congress leader is said to have called upon the party leaders to brace up for contesting all 87 Assembly seats in the State during the elections. The party veteran according to insiders, was of the opinion that the Congress was very well poised in five districts of Jammu region including Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, Reasi and Udhampur, where, he claimed, the party was in a position to win majority of seats provided that a little more attention was paid there. However, he anticipated a stiff contest in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch with "two regional parties" (NC and PDP) apart from BJP. He called upon the Congress cadre to pay more focus on these five districts to garner maximum seats from there. |
