| No strong contenders in race within Cong for LS polls | | BJP's sweeping victory adds to 'fears' of candidates | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 9: With BJP registering victory all over almost in a demolishing way, it has added fears to already scared Congress in facing Parliamentary elections in the state, specifically for two seats of Jammu region. As the party high command is yet undecided in naming the probable candidates, there are no claimants nor strong contenders this time in the party contrary to what used to be a scene months ahead of polls within the party. Sources said party high command wishes to repeat the sitting MPs for the two Parliamentary constituencies -Madan Lal Sharma for Jammu Poonch constituency and Lal Singh for Udhampur LS seat but both the leaders, who are quite senior and experienced in the hierrachy of state unit, are reluctant this time in contesting the Lok Sabha elections. Sources said both the leaders are understood to have conveyed this to appropriate quarters in New Delhi that they are not too willing to contest the polls from the seats wherefrom party has registered victory for two consecutive terms. Pertinently, Union Health minister and former chief minister of state Ghulam Nabi Azad has already expressed the same mood few days back and conveyed in more than explicit manner that he was not interested in contesting the LS polls from Doda-Udhampur constituency, from where the high command would have sought him to get prepared. However, what comes as a situation taking almost u turn in comparison to past, there is no race at any level among the leaders as contenders for the LS polls this time. Sources said while the party high command is still undecided and delaying a formal announcement, the dilemma for New Delhi this time may be on a different front as there is no 'face' even from the second line of state leadership willing on their own to join the Parliamentary poll fray. The biggest challenge unlike in the past for the high command may be to make an appropriate choice for the two constituencies from a 'hand picked' lot, rather than leaders on their own seeking mandate and virtually running or lobbying for it , sources said. However, the scene may not be so for the Ladakh constituency, where the party in all all liklihood may field candidate in 'understanding' with coalition partner NC, no matter the latter in a way betrayed the Congress last time in projecting its proxy candidate even after having alliance with party. Sources within the Congress party in candidates this time being in denial mode and more than reluctant in contesting the LS polls are more than just one, also depending on individual interests of the candidates, but one of the strongest reasons is certainly attributed to all pervasive Narender Modi wave which can fetch huge electoral gains for BJP this time, provided the leadership is able to make appropriate choices in fielding candidates. |
