| J&K reels under power crisis as NHPC makes merry | | Ganderbal Hydel Project faces resource crunch | | Early TImes Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 13: The much talked about 100 MW New Ganderbal Hydel Project has been delayed due to shortage of funds. Despite the tall claims made by State Government of starting the work on Project with full swing this year the Project has been constantly delayed eventhough work started on it over 10 years back. According to sources, the funds constraint has been the main cause of delay in its construction till date. Sources said had the work been started with full pace the project would have been completed till date. But even the ancillary works have not been done in last 10 years, sources added. Sources said the construction of new Ganderbal project was taken up over 10 years back to boost the power production in the state to meet out the domestic needs to some extent. But the slow pace of work shows that Project will not be completed in next 10 years also. The constant delay in completion of Project and increasing the power generation in the state is a testimony to the fact that there is no end to power crisis in the state for many years to come. The people in the State have blamed the Government for its failure in generating the natural resources for power generation during last 65 years of Independence. Lambasting the Government veteran trade unionist and Peoples Conference leader, Mir Ghulam Rasool said that maximum projects have been given to NHPC by State Government and out of total generation they had to give 12 percent free of cost to the State as per MOU which they failed to do so far. Mir said NHPC is earning Rs 40,000 crore from these projects annually in the state while people here reel under power crisis. Expressing concern over the stoic silence maintained by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah over the issue, Mir demanded that NHPC should give due share of power to the State to meet its domestic needs. He said the former Minister of PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-Ud-Din had raised the issue and strongly advocated for recovery of water tax from NHPC but later he too bowed before the pressure of his Party High Command. Mir also alleged that Indus water Treaty with Pakistan has also been an impediment in proper utilisation of water resources by State Government and demanded that the Treaty be scrapped so that State can make full advantage of its water resources. |
